October Energy Hog Assemblies
October is a busy lineup of fun activities for PowerSave staff and their school teams. Most notably, October marks the season for Energy Hog Assemblies. The Energy Hog is a dastardly, energy-wasting villain that student superheroes work to defeat throughout the school year. The Energy Hog Assembly introduces the Hog, and provides a fun and memorable way to engage the whole school in energy efficiency. A Local Project Leader (LPL) becomes a Hog Buster for the assembly, and teaches the students how they can save energy and bust Energy Hogs. These Hog Busters work extra hard during dozens of assemblies in October-- Local Project Leaders Nick Bahula and Russel Blakey completed a record 5 assemblies in one day! And it’s not just the LPLs that work hard. Students at the assemblies can get involved in energy patrols and have a hands-on opportunity to help save energy on campus. |

At LeGore School, the PowerSave staff held two assemblies for grades K-6, introducing over 580 students to the Energy Vampire and Energy Hog, and learned what it means to be energy efficient at their school. LPLs Zenia Montero and Russel Blakey presented an Energy Vampire skit, where the LeGore student PowerSave Team acted as masked “PowerSavers” who defeated the Energy Vampire, played by Russel. This creative skit was followed by an Energy Hog Assembly, where Zenia busted the goofy Hog and helped save the school. The students were engaged and excited to become Energy Hog Busters by saving energy with the PowerSave Team. |

At Rio Hondo Elementary School, PowerSave Campus Interns even got involved in defeating the hapless hog, as Phoo Kine from Cal-Poly Pomona hopped in the hot Hog suit to help hammer home the hurdles to energy efficiency. This assembly was held for grades 2 through 6, and was attended by more than 250 students. Shirpser School had a crowd of over 400 students as not one, but TWO Hog Busters helped the students identify and fight energy waste. These exciting assemblies were repeated at school after school by enthusiastic and tireless LPLs.

Conclusion
The Energy Hog is an antihero verging on the villainous. The bumbling boar represents needless electricity use, and the assemblies amplify students’ key role in preventing energy waste on campus. Students make up the majority of people at any school, and they are often prime ambassadors for energy efficiency in their classrooms and communities. Reaching them through energetic and borderline silly assemblies helps make saving energy fun and engaging, particularly in elementary school. Empowered with greater knowledge of what energy is and why it matters, students leave Energy Hog assemblies equipped to deal with the everyday issue of how we use energy. These assemblies are truly a joy, but the progress that follows them is even more thrilling.
